Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for July 05, 2010
Transcript:
Ekert: Hi! Danae, Lucy, and Kate: Uh... hi. Kate: Who are you? Danae: ...And what are you? Ekert: Ekert... and hungry! Kate: No... she meant... Ekert: Oh, I'm happy, too! Hungry and happy! Mostly hungry... But being hungry doesn't make me less happy, just that I haven't eaten in a long time, which is how I got so small, but that's OK, too... Danae: OK... I think I know why someone locked it in the shed... The mystery of the locked shed continues...

Out of all the things that could have been in that shed I was not expecting an elephant-fairy. What will it look like after itâs eaten, I wonderâŠ?
ksoskins over 14 years ago
Itâs the fabled pixie pachyderm perhaps named Ekert.

To answer a question posed here a few days ago, when I posted a link to a high resolution image of the comic ; I discovered it when the Zazzle ad to the right of the comics failed a few months ago, and Richard Thompson, creator of Cul de Sac, noticed that if you clicked on the proto-Zazzle ad, it produced a very high resolution image of his comic. Last week was the first time I tried to look for the link, but I found it this way: open up the source code for this page. Then search for âzazzleâ. By about the third instance of that word, you should find code that ends in â?mime=gifâ. Highlight and Copy the section of code that starts with âhttpâ to âmime=gifâ, and Paste it to your address bar.

OK, the question in MY mind at this point is WHAT is it hungry for? What do elephant-fairies eat? Wiley is one person I would never accuse of having no imagination. :)

If I were next to a creature that mentioned the word âhungryâ so many times, I think I would start running :-)

chairump said,
âjustin ânother swipe at the gopâ
Huh? Where do you see a âswipe at the gopâ?
TheDOCTOR over 14 years ago
There was a character on Dextersâ Laboratory, a plnk elephant with wings with Dom Deluiseâs voice, that only Dextersâ sister could see or hear.

Wiley, I think chairump is thinking along the lines that the GOPâs mascot is an elephant and that the party has shrunk to a fraction of its original size.
Then again, itâs hard to understand exactly how the far right thinks, so I may be completely off base.
Wiley creator over 14 years ago
Wow. That would be quite a reach.

Far better the far right than the far left, look what it did to the Russians.

Wiley, does EVERONE who read you âtoon have to write a comment? Is it o.k. if I just enjoy it and move on?
Your âtoons are the best but the comments are tiresome!

Elephants eat peanuts of course as well as grass and leafy green veggies.

Wiley, I think weâve seen this little guy/girl before, long, long, ago, but I cannot remember the context. Very cute little hefalump thoâ. And the kids look awesomely flabergasted! Great art again. Thanks for the chuckle.

Eletelephony by Laura Richards
Once there was an elephant, Who tried to use the telephant- No! No I mean an elephone who tried to use the telephone. (Dear me! I am not certain, quite, That even now Iâve got it right.) Howeâre it was, he got his trunk Entangled in the telephunk; The more he tried to get it free, The louder buzzed the telephee- (I fear Iâd better drop the song Of Elephop and Telephong.)

Danae, quit frowning and saying sarcastically! Do something to feed the elephant-fairy right away. It looks very hungry.

Itâs from Winnie the Poohâs 100 Acre Woods, and yes, it is a âHefalumpâ! ( Isnât it, Wiley? Hmm?)

SHEIK: No wonder you get complements on your avatar. Thatâs Rudolph Valentino, the heart throb of silent movie times. And no I wasnât around to see him. As to the tiny elephant, does he remind anyone of the Dr. Seuss book âHorton Hears the Whoâ character?
bobpeters61 over 14 years ago
Whatever the case is, I sense that Danaeâs about to put it back in.
pawpawbear over 14 years ago
I can only hope that I can follow most of this one. I leave again for the road tomorrow and donât always get to get online. Good thread Wiley. And as long as the comments are not personnally insulting I love them.
Reminds me of an old-fashioned barbershop.

ArthurAllen,
Not necessarily high res, but a larger version on the comic can be seen by left clicking on it. A second left click restores it.
Logicman over 14 years ago
Hey ArthurAllen â thanks for the explanation! Kinda kludgy, but it works, and it is far better than the âzoom clickâ method I was using!
Now if we can just get past this âif it is an elephant/donkey it must refer to the GOP/Democratsâ mindset. Sometimes a cigar is just a smoke after all!
Kerovan over 14 years ago
Itâs entirely possible that this thing appeared in Dexterâs laboratory, but I seem to remember something like it from some kidâs story too. I canât remember the details but I think it caused a lot of trouble. Seems like Danae has found a new partner in that sense.
jump4joy over 14 years ago
Arthur AllenâHow do you open up the source code to this page?
Justice22 over 14 years ago
As long as it is a good firefly elephant and doesnât eat bunnies. I canât tell what is in the end of itâs âtrunkâ.
dmw2lls over 14 years ago
I saw an old Warner Bros. cartoon about this once. I think it was called âPicayune Pachyderm Panics Publicâ, no no no that was the newspaper headline. What was it calledâŠ.?

Wonder if Ekert is a he or she?âŠand what does it eat?âŠand how fast and big does it grow?âŠ.and is it really just a happy and hungry little cuteypie?âor is it actually an insidiously clever and insatiable monster from the pits of hell!!
Inquiring minds want to know, Wiley.

Yes âHorton Hears a Whoâ but someone mentioned âHeffalumpâ which is from âWinnie the Poohâ. So what do we have, a Heffalump, or a Who from Whoville, or something else entirely? I CANâT WAIT TO SEE! :-)
MatureCanadian over 14 years ago
Actually, this one is neither a Heffalump or a Whoville Horton. Seems to me I remember now it might be one of the Sunday thread characters. Canât remember all the characters off the top of my head, but the one about heaven, with the dog that changes from being a dog to a duck to a elephant fairy? Somebody help, Wiley?
