Phoebe: It's nice having the power back on but it's fun having it go out for a while. That dark, the quiet... it's like camping! Dad: If I were camping I would make sure the wi-fi didn't go out. Phoebe: Mom says you camp wrong.
I’m British. I regularly drive to and camp on sites around Europe, in a tent with comfortable beds and chairs, on dedicated sites with (usually) decent sanitary and other facilities. Oh, and WiFi nowadays. I love being under canvas, but roughing it for the sake of it, when I can be perfectly comfortable, is either masochism, misplaced nostalgia or just plain silly.
When I was in the Boy Scouts camping involved carrying your supplies from the parking area to the campsite, pitching and sleeping in tents and cooking over a campfire. I later revived the experience when I was airplane crazy and attended Oshkosh on a semi-regular basis. There was a campsite right next to the airshow, and I was willing to live with sleeping in a tent and using the communal shower in order to spend more time looking at airplanes. I’ve had absolutely no desire to go camping since.
Phoebe’s dad should count his blessings…I remember owning a Dennis, The Menace coming book once where the Mitchell family suffered a power outage, and it lasted for a week. That is until Dennis’ dad bumped into Mr. Wilson, and learned that HIS electricity had come back on by the next morning.A quick foray into the basement showed that all the circuit breakers had been tripped…and a step ladder had been left parked at the breaker-box.When Henry confronted his son about it, Dennis just shrugged. “Gee Dad, I thought we was havin’ fun…campin’ out.”In the last panel, Dennis was parked in a chair, facing into a corner.

But at least they leave the light on for you.

Gotta admit, camping with electronics doesn’t really feel like camping. Actually, it feels more like cheating.

I believe I camped once. Other than the accidental poisoning, the rancid mud, the leeches and the wasps, it was a delightful experience…

I’d like to see Phoebe’s dad and Calvin’s dad meet.
“Disconnection builds character.”
“Wi-fi builds character too.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“Sure it does. Look at this Level 1 Healer I just built.”

Army 1952. Woke up one morning to see a cow stickick her head into the tent. She had just had a calf.
