you do have to know where to look in the book and read it to find the answer

The idea works well for things like formulas and so on. The difficulty I saw it create was that students wouldn’t study (I’ll have the book, duh) and spent an incredible amount of time looking for each answer and so ran out of time. The method I used was to let them bring a hand written cheat sheet. The time they spent working on the cheat sheet was effectively their most productive studying.
