Amateurs can work hard, achieve a goal and then ease up. Pros have to keep torturing themselves to stay in top shape. As for Calvin, that perpetual chattermouth, I would think he is always in top shape to chew.

In today’s strip, it’s possible that Bill Watterson is making a reference to the fact that, while he was really good at cartooning, it required a whole lot of effort and endurance to maintain his high standards. Over time, as it became increasingly difficult for him to sustain the strip at its incredibly high level, his own level of enjoyment began to diminish.

That would explain Calvin’s manly physique.

    If it’s worth doing, it’s worth over-doing.

@LX013: Yes, Calvin’s gum chewing is like a pianist having to spend a lot of time doing miserable, boring finger exercises on the piano, in order to be able to continue to perform at a high level of perfection.

@LX013: It’s easier if you don’t chew gum while you are singing.

I, too, miss it being referred to as a “regimen”…evolution of language is fine, but through ingrained misuse is just sad.

We can get these products in Austria, but I don’t want them, I do without them! I don’t like artificial sugar, sometimes I take a bit Stevia, when it is too ghastly without sugar!!

I always think chewed gum looks like a brain.

Pink chewed gum looks even more realistic!

    Eww.

Ha ha, enjoyed all the comments about golf, and all of them are true! I used to golf quite a bit, but now I enjoy watching a game from a comfortable seat at our club, or at home on our big screen TV.

Interesting story about going from amateur to pro. I had a customer who was about my age and he taught some business classes at a local college. When he was in college, he played a lot of golf, and unlike me, he was very good at the game; so good, his friends convinced him he should try out for and go pro, so he did!

He discovered, much to his chagrin, he was no longer having fun playing a game he loved to play! It became a job for him, as if his livelihood depended upon his success, which it did. After a few years, he threw in the towel, quit the pro circuit, and went back to just enjoying golf for the fun of the game…
