    Something like “It’s time to return the dog” reinforces the original agreement better. “He wants his dog back” sounds like he is making some kind of (possibly unreasonable) demand.

    I think in this case, it’s less about the wording and more about the inflection in the voice while saying it.

    Either Mortimer will snarl at Ray and not go back, or Joe will dig up some obscure law about ownership on the grounds of microchipping M – and then feel like crap about it for a week…
