Nice appraisal, Mr. Rod. (How else can Baldo get a raise?)

Yeah, those darn “good employees.” Always angling for something. Never trust them, I say.

I hate bosses like that. I had a lot of them as a young person 40 years ago. Might as well have been lazy, late and incompetent like the other teenagers. If you don’t reward good behavior, you will have lousy employees, or at least, resentful ones. Not the way to run a business.

Maybe he should ask for a referral instead.

Mr. Rod wouldn’t happen to be related to anyone named J. Jonah Jameson, would he?

About 25 years ago I worked for a department store where the employees had a contract that guarenteed a raise every six months so I was surprised when I picked up my check one week and found out that I had a raise 3 months early. I asked my boss if there’d been a mistake since I figured I hadn’t done anything to deserve a merit raise as they were called. He told me, “You’re always here on time for your shift, you work hard, you’re never drunk, and the only time you call in is when you’re really sick. Compared to most of our employees you deserve that raise.”

patlaborviI am surprised it was only 25 years ago. Now most stores are part of a chain, store managers cannot set policy, and home office is not just anti-union, but anti-worker in general.

In my early 20s I worked for a large aerospace corporation. I quit after finding a memo that reminded supervisors that employee performance was not to be considered in wage increases. I found another job in less than two weeks and did well.
