All nativity plays I’ve seen take liberties with the text. They’re set in stables with lots of animals. The Bible never says so. it just says Joseph and Mary used a manger as a makeshift bed for Jesus.
That they were in a stable is one possible theory. Another is that they were taken in by a kindhearted person who let them sleep on the floor in his/her house, and got a manger as a makeshift bed for baby Jesus.
The wise men, however, most likely came much later as evidenced by Herod having all children under 2 years of age killed, in hopes of killing Christ. Also it seems they came from different countries, not one a few hours’ ride or walk away, that the star (whatever it was) appeared at his birth rather than as much as a year before to let them show up the first night..Lots of questions, main one being whether or not he lived as told or if so many were willing to die rather than renounce a lie they were telling.
Strikes me that Father Gene is one of the more common adults we see in the strip. There are some of course, (notably Grannie) but not many. Don’t even think we see Trout’s Mom as much as we’ve seen Father Gene.

There goes inclusiveness. Nice try though, Agnes.

It’s surprising how often Agnes’ remark in the final frame is accurate.
