So are these folks’ brains, if they judge restaurants by the buses.
Years ago, I bought a Greyhound bus pass, which I don’t think is available any more,
and traveled from California to Illinois, to visit relatives… three consecutive days and nights on the bus.
I stayed with an aunt, and took short bus trips to several different cities in the state…. then 3 days back to California.
It was very cheap, when planes were expensive… I was young, and I survived.
But when it comes to restaurants….
Greyhound drivers never just looked at a sign and decided to stop.
They had contracts with certain restaurants for tightly scheduled stops.
Passing through small towns and a few cities, looping off the highway to pick up passengers at various bus stations,
you could look at a printed schedule and know which stops would allow time to get off the bus,
and whether you’d have 10 minutes to stretch your legs or a whole half hour for a meal.
The restaurants, likewise, would know when the buses would arrive, and how quickly they needed to feed 25 to 50 people per bus, so they wouldn’t miss their departures.
That part was fairly efficient.
The bad news is… you might pass a dozen fairly appealing places to stop… but you never did.
As soon as it neared the scheduled stop time, and from the bus windows, you spotted the most run-down, ramshackle, isolated cafe …
usually far from other restaurants, because part of the contract was delivering a captive busload of hungry passengers…
You KNEW, in your sinking heart, that this was going to be your next meal stop.
Huge U-shaped counters, instead of tables, for faster service…
dirty rest rooms, and hyper children who’d just spent all day cooped up on a bus.
“Today’s Special” … lukewarm meat loaf, canned green beans, and mashed potatoes.
