Timmy never noticed. He’s been with them so long that he long ago created an imaginary family. So on the way home, he happily talked to his imaginary grandpa, and when he got home, hit imaginary granny gave him cookies.
My son was disabled, and in a wheelchair. At school he would not speak a word. He was diagnosed with selective mutism. He was a regular chatterbox everywhere else. Weird, because we would record him at home doing oral reports and I would burn it to DVD for them to watch in class. He had a speech device that was his own recordings of generic phrases, so it’s not like they hadn’t heard him speak.
I accompanied him on the school’s field trip to the Bronx Zoo. He LOVED animals! He would not say a word to me the whole trip, even when we were alone in an elevator together. When we got back, as soon as we pulled out of the school parking lot, he started in “Did you see that monkey! Those bats were cool! I liked it when they fed the Tiger!” He went on nonstop for the whole ride home!

I’m no expert, but perhaps Dale’s listening skills could use some polishing..
