That is well written. If you are really going to celebrate Christmas, take out all the pagan trappings: No trees or holly, no santas or snowmen or wassailing andyou will be left with a Nativity scene, a star and some really nice music. But to each his own. This heathen celebrates life’s renewal and the return of light.
This isn’t how it really is in schools. No one bans Christmas or the mention of it. In fact, it’s seen as an opportunity to teach the kids about other religions and holidays celebrated during the month of December. Dec. 7th, Pearl Harbor Day, is covered and its significance to the start of American involvement in WWII. Hanukkah, the Jewish peoples’ celebration of the miracle of oil that burned for 8 days. Kwanzaa, celebrated by African Americans in honor of their African heritage, which begins the day after Christmas and lasts for 7 days and emphasizes community, responsibility, creativity and faith to name a few. Winter Solstice celebrated by many cultures, but especially Pagans. Yule also falls into this category of the Mid-Winter celebrations and the returning of the sun. So, no, Christmas isn’t banned or excluded, just included with all the other reasons for celebrating the end of the old year and the start of the new.
Teaching the kiddies “You will conform to the christian world view or there will be repercussions” is not sane. At best it teaches them to be little hypocrites. At worst it teaches them that people who don’t think and act and dress and believe as they do are evil and alien and not to be trusted and can be made to go sit out in the hall while the good people, the “true” people get to do things.
Less than 300 years ago, you could be tossed into the stocks in the public square for celebrating Christmas in many of the Colonies and that was by good “god fearing Christians” who considered such things as pagan folly and disrespect to your god.
Which is it? Both groups cannot be right but both groups claim the same god and the same beliefs.
