I remember years ago reading an article on the Brooklyn Bridge, how when it was originally built the idea was that it was going to ease traffic over another bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn and end congestion in that part of NYC. The irony was that within something like ten years of it’s opening traffic over both bridges was double what it had been over the other bridge and congestion was even worse. It’s not just folks having babies that causes traffic problems.

US population growth is almost flat 0.7%, lowest since great depression. Crude birth rate is about 1.3%. crude death rate is .8%, so growth due to births is 0.5% (the other 0.2% from immigration). Of course certain cities regions are growing more quikly, but would be from migration mostly.

That said, as I get older I do see more babies, but think it was because I was so busy with mine while they were growing (the forest from the tree view)

    Female rats aren’t fussy.

Population growth is actually slowing, so we’re not really heading for an over-population crisis any more, but still our cities have got too bloated and we’d probably be a lot more comfortable and less damaging to the world if the human population dropped by a quarter to a third.

What does it matter? Jesus is coming back any day now to take the worthy to the rapture and send all the rest to hell to burn forever. The “worthy” of course are the Westboro Baptist folks and anybody else who believes this to be true, including some of those who would be our leaders and who would tell us: “resources, we don’t need no stinkin’ resources.”

The trouble is no matter how many roads you build into a city the city still can only handle the same amount of traffic. That is why public transportation is inevitable. Trains and buses can replace hundreds of private vehicles.

some people think 1 or 2 kids is not enough. but, 10 or 20 kids is enough. 20 kids in 20 years. or, giving birth to a 19.75 pound baby boy with no drugs(against their religion).

Rat should move to Detroit, I hear they have lots of open roads, houses, etc…

Problem I see is there isn’t really over population, its everyone wants to live in the same places and resources need to be managed better and some places lack certain resources, while others have extra. That is why if you figure the math everyone on this planet, could fit in the state of texas and still have plenty of room to themselves.

Rat should probably have got up and walked out of the street, rather than sit in traffic for 2 hours.

What do you mean overpopulation isn’t a problem anymore? Maybe not with US citizens, but the rest of the world is much different. We can not solve thier problems.

I love how people seem to forget that population growth hasn’t slowed as much people think it has – the RATE of growth is what’s slowing down. Ergo, the population is still growing. Besides, most of the resources we take for granted are finite, and those that aren’t are mostly being harvested at a completely unsustainable rate.

Yes, Rat; lots of screaming going around around here, and not a little ignorance put proudly on display as well. Chill, rodent-buddy!

I recently saw a sticker on somebody car saying “Autistic Baby On Board”

Why the hell should the condition be mentioned? “Baby on Board” would have been just fine!

Everyone seems to think that overpopulation is the point of today’s strip. I think it’s more about all the screaming babies whose parents don’t even try to quiet or keep calm; being stuck in an ocean of rotten little screamers for two hours can’t be pleasant.

Rat is very right, families should be limited to 2 or 1 babies so we can reduce the population. It’s called birth control and it’s a good idea and anyone who disagrees is stupid.
