Lio is just doing his civic duty as he sees it. GR needs to conserve his strength, because he’s going to be really, really busy at his destination!

Everybody knows that tobacco is dangerous so they should think: stop smoking! Well done, Lio!

Why’s he being so mean to tobacco? Everyone knows it doesn’t hurt you. See? I smoked a cigarette and nothing happened. Proof positive that smoking is healthy! ….

On a more serious note, NY has just increased its cigarette tax to over $4 a pack. People note that some smokers are getting around it by going to other states or reservations, but I think the real power of that tax is that NON-smokers are less likely to start (young kids will find it too expensive and too much hassle to get). If that’s the case, it’s worth it.

Up here in Canada, they have even banned smoking from restaurants and bars (!). Previously you could have enclosed, separated designated smoking sections but that too was eventually phased out. People were upset over it and businesses/bars said that would be the end of them, but guess what… not much difference. Since we have a nationalized health system, this saves us money in the end. Maybe all that crazy government control won’t work in the US, but it is a saner way to live. Watch someone with COPD and I dare you to smoke!

Nothing like seeing some poor schmuck walk by with an oxygen tank, a hose in his nose and smoking a cigarette. Which you aren’t supposed to do either. We know so much about freedom we forget liberty has it’s price. In your life and the lives around you.

lio is headed in the right direction

on a side note, NY is in the process (again) of trying to tax tobacco products on the reservations purchased by non native americans. a federal judge has made it illegal for the reservations to mail tobacco products.

Baslim, I remember that scene too: cop is smoking a cigarette, Death touches his shoulder, and the cop immediately start hacking up a long. Definitely worth a knowing smirk.

In our area, smoking is banned in public places and, of course, there’s a lot of controversy. One point brings it home to me: that people need jobs but shouldn’t be exposed to the dangers of second-hand smoke in their work environments. I can see that business owners should be allowed freedom but if they choose a smoking environment, there should be some protection choice(s) for employees who need/want the protection.

    Very nice.

@baslim the begger – If I recall correctly (and yes, my copy of Citizen of the Galaxy is only a few feet away as I type this), Col. Richard Baslim knew how to spell “beggar” correctly; and anyway he went by “Baslim the Cripple” while on Sargon. You really need to change your screen name accordingly. Don’t make the Free Traders track you down and space you.
