The irony is, as soon as Elizabeth shows up in school with her earrings, her former friend will have something else to brag about, and will tell her that pierced ears are so yesterday…
Years ago, my 3 daughters wanted their ears pierced. We all went together and I had mine done too. I was the only one who had any trouble. Allergic to the metal in the earring post (I didn’t find out until a lot later that that was the cause), they would drain pus even though I cleaned them as I should. I finally had to take them out and they immediately closed up. I’ve never gotten it redone! My kid’s piercings were trouble free.
Times have changed. When my daughter was just a few years older than Lizzie, all the girls were getting nose studs, belly rings, and such. My wife said, “You will never get anything pierced. Body piercings are disgusting.” I said, “Dear, look at your own ears.” “Well, that’ different. That’s just ears.” My daughter still had to wait until she was 18 to get her ears pierced, though. Never had anything else done (as far as we know).
SPOILER ALERTDon’t worry about it Ellie, she’s not gonna shave her head or dye her hair ridiculous colors like her friend Candace will when she’s older. Although I think Candace started doing things like that because it discouraged her stepfather from sexually harassing her, since her mother refused to acknowledge the problem.
My oldest started begging about 4 years old…I finally gave in at 6. I told her it hurt…she didn’t care. We went to a mall pagoda type store. Open on all sides to the shoppers.. One ear done and she turned into a screaming banshee and fought having the other done. People were walking around us and glaring at me the cruel Mama! LOL! Second girl started begging about the same age so at 6…I braced myself as the first ear was done… she winced but made no sound. Different child different reaction. To everything. All their lives.
Why be afraid? So many cultures pierce ears when kids are babies and I’ve never seen it affect their ears. I even had mine done around 3 months old!! I think it would’ve been easier on both if she had it done early on!
When I finally gave in to peer pressure and got my ears pierced (at age 19), after the first one was done I didn’t want to do the second one!! OUCH!!! Too bad those were the days before wearing a single earring was “in”.
Except for the four screws and two pins in my left foot, the two pins in my right footthe steel plate and seven screws in my right legthe four screws in my neck, and the up coming artificial knee I am just as normal as any one could be!No big Deal!Deal with it!
I pierced my own ears when I was 19. I have the largest, thickest ear lobes you’ve ever seen! I’m glad I did it, because the jewelry hides a lot of the extra large size lobe. Waitresses in Chinese restaurants stare at them and tell me that large lobes are good luck for the owner of them. I say, phooey on that! I haven’t won the lottery yet!

Just tell her there will be needles. And blood. That usually turns kids off.

Lizzie will have them done and the other girl will have infected ears, then Lizzie won’t want them anymore!
