Even weirder than that is Susie actually trusting Calvin’s answer to be correct.
What’s the most science-fictiony of all, though, is the history of medieval Poland being part of a first-grade curriculum. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that kind of thing on Star Trek: TNG :-P but in real life I don’t think it’d work.
This has to be the ONLY time Susie ever asked Calvin for the answer to a test question. And it is DEFINITELY the only time Calvin ever got one right, even if it is by accident.
Isn’t Susie even hearing what Calvin is doing? She will probably beat him up when she finds out she has the wrong answer, but she had it coming for listening to him.
What kind of gun makes the sound Krakow? Next revving cars will sound like Seattle. Spaceman Spiff probably knows the answer because the florgberj people took over Krakow and destroyed it in 1600.
I fist laughed at this joke when I saw it when I was 11. I thought it was just silly. Later when I was 20 and learned that Krakow was correct, I laughed all over again. C&H works on so many levels.
Sorry, Mr. Watterson. Calvin could never have uttered the words, “Virtue is its own reward.” —not unless the aliens captured him and brainwashed him in their “reorientation” camps!
Tie the answers in with Calvin’s fantasy world. “Psst, hey Calvin, When did Columbus sail the ocean?”“After 1492 hits, Spiff sinks the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria”.

This comic inspired me to visit Krakow in Poland, and as of March of last year, I was able to cross that off my bucket list.

Cracow (also Krakow): capital city of Poland from 1320 to 1609, when it was replaced by Warsaw.

Everyone is fixated on Susie asking Calvin for an answer and Calvin being correct…
How about the more important question – where in America is a first grader expected to know 17th century European history in the first place?

HEY! I resemble that remark!

Wow. I thought Susie was smarter than that to ask Calvin for answers to anything.

I remember it was many years before I actually ever got this joke, when I finally learned that Krakow was an actual place.
