Boxers have been shown to suffer from CTE. I forget the exact number of fights, other than somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 – 50 seems to be the cutoff, beyond which the condition has been found in every boxer studied. No doubt MMA and UFC fighters, and any other gladiators that come along, will suffer the same fate.
That boxing exists and people pay to see other people bashing each others brains and enjoying it is one of those things that makes me ashamed to be human, on the same continuum as war.
I used to watch matches in Thailand Korea and Japan. In Korea, one contestant kicked the other in the chest, the sideline medics had to get his heart started before they carted him off to hospital. Broke his breastbone, along with several ribs. Then again, the matches I watch are full contact, while most people in the US are, like you say, just playing Karate, I do not think that here in the US even the “full contact” contests, aren’t really full contact. Mostly because there are laws against that kind of fighting. I used to watch a few real masters of their art and believe that they would never be allowed into UFC or MMA. #1 because real fights last less than 1 min and #2 there is a pretty good chance, if the fighters are not skill matched, that one will be seriously injured or even die.
Not karate.Real Masters don’t like dead students.Probably you were in a class taught by an extremely worthless person, a con artist.Probably some hyper aggressive steroided out person who had two classes and treats the 4, 6, 9, 12…29…56…90, and 91 year olds the same...If I went back to class for a year I could test for being allowed to obey Master on what I could, what Master thinks I can teach.

@Duncan. You got that right but our country cousins share some of the same sins. Dog fighting (both country and urban) is barbaric and disgusting.

I could test for my black belt. Without it I don’t know enough to be a teacher.
