Depends on “illegal.” Steroids without legitimate prescriptions WERE illegal as a matter of federal law, they just weren’t tested for at the time, nor were they penalized in BASEBALL.
Lessee ! We got a Russian athlete using a banned substance which, even before it was “banned” was known to enhance performances and claims she used it for a health problem she really didn’t have. Do we simply ignore it ?Give her a slap on the wrist because she’s good looking and, after all, we know the PED’s and Russian athletes go together like butter on bread ?
@Linguist, you left out East Germans, Bulgarians, Czech, Romanian, Chinese, Canadian and, U.S. athletes. I’m sure there are other nations as well. Yes, Russian athletes have a long history of abuse when it comes to HGH and PED usage, but let’s not let others escape the moral outrage.
