It occurs to me that there may have been another name for the color before there was a common object OF that color. It would be natural to start referring to the color using the same word as the common object. My kumquats are orange, just imagine if they had been well known first, the word for the color “orange” might well be kumquat..(By the way, if you actually look at school buses, you will notice they are actually orange, not yellow.)

One of the First Nations has no word for “orange” because there are no flowers that colour where they live. I think it’s Navajo, but don’t quote me.
