Gene: When we started farming, we said we wouldn't do this... Gene: Sit by the side of the road and sell to tourists! Mary Lou: Yes, we did! Mary Lou: We were going to wholesale to restaurants and local markets! And we blew through a hunk of a our investment! Gene: So here we are, 'Farmers' Last Stand'! Mary Lou: That's a good name for a Twitter account!

I don’t get the last line….But I’m a Facebook guy…I go by my own name…I know nothing about Twitter other than the fact that politicians use it a lot to make pronouncements..

I grew up in farm country – but none of the farm wives dressed like that (alas)!

Well, they are small truck farmers, and they’re still young. And they’re learning the realities of farming.

I started growing veg when I was in my early 20s, and I’ve had gardens in upstate NY and in East Texas. I’ve grown wonderful tomatoes over the years. The two best tomatoes I’ve ever had, though, were from a free packet of unidentified seeds that was stuck in a magazine and from an old man selling out of his pickup on the side of the road. Foolishly, I didn’t ask what type they were and I could never find him again. The petty annoyances of life.

Practical people, thanks to their parents both kids are flexible about their plan and willing to do the work to see them done.

I miss the roadside produce stands. At one time they were plentiful in the Santa Clara valley near San Francisco. Miles and miles more miles of farms growing everything you might imagine. Now it’s known as the “Silicon Valley” and all they grow is concrete and buildings.
