If he went to WikiSpecies he could see the list of subspecies of wolves. Of course, historically the word wolf has covered other species, but today it applies to canis lupus in many of its subspecies [and to figurative meanings (’he’s a wolf,’ ‘wolf that food down,’ etc).]

“He rants about the different species of wolf where he lives even though there is only one species worldwide, ".Technically true, since all subspecies can interbreed if they can figure out how, but consider the many subspecies and how different they are.I saw where there is a major study going on to try to figure where each branch of the subspecies diverged but there has been so much interbreeding across lines that they have their work cut out for them..The differences are great enough that it would be unreasonable to fault someone for considering them different species...“Canis lupus has 40 subspecies currently described, including the dingo, Canis lupus dingo, and the domestic dog, Canis lupus familiaris, and many subspecies of wolf throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The nominate subspecies is Canis lupus lupus.”
