Just replace South Africa with “Black Lives Matter” or “Palestine” and Breathed would not have to change another thing if he wanted to paste this into a new “Bloom County 2019”. Man, 47 years since this strip was first published and sadly a lot of things have not changed.

H.L. Mencken: Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant.

There are Risks associated with everything we do (or fail to do).

Often the risks associated with inaction are significantly greater than the ones from any Course of Action. In those cases it’s worth taking a chance even on a COA with high risk.

I’m sure there’s earlier examples, but Americans made up part of the XV International “Abraham Lincoln” Brigade that suffered heavy casualties fighting on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War. Most recently, Americans fought on at least two sides of the Syrian Civil War. Some of the ones who joined IS were prosecuted afterwards.
