Oh…the choices…I want to not blame the cigarette companies but they seduced us. Now they found a new way. Vaping!

I don’t remember if it was an actual Kool cigarette ad or just a mock one for Kook cigarettes that showed penguins smoking, there was a set of cards or stickers that mocked various brand items, I think another cigarette brand was Sail’ems better to sail ’em than to smoke ’em.

Back about this time, Camel used “Joe Camel”as a mascot to promote its brand and attract younger smokers. Joe Camel attracted kids, that is for certain as by the early ’90s the AMA said that 5 year old kids recognized “Joe” more easily than Bugs Bunny, Fred Flintstone or Mickey Mouse. Additionally RJ Reynolds used Camel Cash aka “C-Notes”, one in each pack, to collect and claim “cool” Camel merchandise like fake Wayfarers, Zippo lighters, decks of cards, heck even a leather jacket……. The tobacco conglomerate is a bunch of disgusting corporate tools with stooges still working for them inside the beltway and in Congress…..

Magazine ads for Camels had a picture of a crowd of people, and one guy walking away with his jacket slung over his shoulder. Guess who was the Camel smoker?

In my smoking years we had Marlboro “points” or whatever they were called that could be used for some decent outdoor gear. It was all Marlboro branded but pretty good stuff.

Back when the 100 mm ones came out, one brand had an ad that said “It’s not how long you make it, it’s how you make it long”. People had fun with that one.

Smoking IS dangerous, as 400K – 500K deaths per year from tobacco related illness prove! But… let’s see… roughly 330M people in this country, and the CDC estimated in 2021 that 28.3M smoke. 500K deaths is what percentage of 28.3M? About 1.7%, i.e., smoking kills fewer than 2% of smokers per year. Put another way, at 1M deaths every two years, it would take smoking 56 years to kill 28M people. Small consolation if you or one of your loved ones dies from smoking, but still, it provides some context for a more objective evaluation of smoking’s danger. I, myself, smoked for over 40 years, but quit 13 years ago.

Tried it a coupla times when I was ten. Made me puke. Within a year everyone I knew was hooked except me and my mom. Today only me and Mom are still alive.
