They do listen, only it’s selectively. And even then, hearing something doesn’t mean one understands it.
Major design flaw or intentional trait by the species who genetically altered the aboriginal Earth hominids.
IMHO the problem is the emphasis on an afterlife promised to be better than life on earth. If that’s the case one would be doing enemies a favor by sending them on to the next life. Also, all faiths want to control their adherent’s sexuality, certainly using a bigger lever than any other. Since the hunger for power exists, how better to add power to an otherwise empty life than by denying one’s fellow creatures the gratification of sex.
“What have I always believed? That on the whole, and by and large, if a man lived properly, not according to what any priests said, but according to what seemed decent and honest inside, then it would, at the end, more or less, turn out all right.” - Terry Pratchett, “Small Gods”
@kfaatz925: In 300 years, they’ll codify that into some kind of “canon.” In 1000 years, they’ll fight Holy Wars over the precise meaning of those words. In 2000 years, people will use those words to make obscene amounts of money, and criticize people who choose to follow some other phrasing of the same principle.

@Furienna It’s not so much that people don’t follow every word (H)e said, it’s just that they don’t seem to follow any of the words (H)e said.
