Cats are better for that job. They can patrol the yard all the time, and they don’t crush the plants. They even leave their poop laying around slightly hidden by the dirt so that squirrels and rabbits can smell it and are scared away. My hollyhocks were eaten every year before I got a couple of cats, now they grow 4-5 feet tall every year.
Somewhat off topic, but speaking of cats, if you have moles in your yard, flip open their tunnels with a shovel and pour in some used kitty litter, then close the flap. The moles will move on to very quickly.
