And yes, specimen can be used as the plural of speciman.

You sure about that? Speciman doesn’t show up in dictionary.com, nor does it appear in the Oxford English Dictionary. (The OED link probably won’t work unless you’re at a university or something similar.)
In fact, one of the few “legitimate” places I could find it was on the blog Typo of the Day for Librarians.
