This also lists a second current-location (couldn’t currently find it online there either).Shovels and pick axes don’t seem appropriate for the title; maybe 1879 was less advanced than I thought (figured horse drawn equipment was already doing that fieldwork). I’ve asked both current-locations about the title. If I get a reply, I’ll post it here. One of the reason’s I thought of Mcalpine’s men was his picture reminded me of the bog farmers trudging off to cut peat. It was reminiscent of my time in Ireland but I saw the same type of thing in France. They used the types of spades and picks seen in the painting .

As down the glen came McAlpine’s menWith their shovels slung behind them‘Twas in the pub they drank the subAnd up in the spike you’ll find them
They sweated blood and they washed down mudWith pints and quarts of beerAnd now we’re on the road againWith McAlpine’s fusiliers
