At least the Styx seems to be shallow at this point, which really surprises me, since Styx is usually very deep.
The Grand Illusion
America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motor car
Someday soon we’ll stop to ponder what on Earth’s this spell we’re under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are
I actually heard the early version of the band that became Styx when they were literally a garage band. Their lyrics to, “The Best of Times” I think are equally good. Although this strip reminds me more of Chris De Burgh.
“Don’t pay the Ferryman.
Don’t even fix a price.
Don’t pay the ferryman
Until he gets you to the other side.”

Oh no! Joy and glad tidings all around!!! Poor Baldur…you’re going back, bud…
Not that we would expect a happy ending in Norse mythology…

Maybe they have strayed into the River Lethe - then they can forget all about it.

Would a plot development at this point be called a Styx shift?

I think they played at my High School–in Chicago’s South Suburbs–in the early ’70s before they got famous. Before I went there, unfortunately. :^(
Do you think the onion got wet?
Will the boys quit crying too soon?
Will Baldr have to return to Hel to take up again night-light (Knight Lite?) duties?
Yes.
