The average life expectancy in the Middle Ages was low but that was because there were a lot of infant deaths, and a lot of diseases for which there was no effective treatment. If you managed to survive to adulthood and not get any serious infections, you had a good chance of living at least into your 60s. I don’t think they would have thought of 50 as old – old would be at least 65, it was just that not many people got to be old.
41 years ago my back made that same horrible noise, (I was 11!) It never made that noise again to this day and I never had a bad back, despite having a very physical working life.I just need new feet as I wore the old set out..
I’m 70 which is beyond middle age. I did 21 miles (33.8km) on my bicycle yesterday going to garage and yard sales. I’l be doing another 20 miles (32.2km) today on a different route.
It isn’t always a matter of shape. When I was 30 I was in the best shape of my life, I was exercising every day and lost a lot of weight and gained a lot of muscle. Unfortunately I inherited my father’s arthritis and it hit me at that time. I threw my back out twice in one month and that’s when I found out I had arthritis, my doctor couldn’t figure out how I managed to throw my back out twice in a month because I was in such good shape, so he had a series of x-rays taken and the arthritis was so obvious he could see it with the naked eye. Over the years the arthritis kept getting worse and I kept throwing my back out, eventioully the arthritis got so bad I ended up on disability and that’s where I am now.

But he is a wizard. He is bound to live longer. Although I doubt magic could help him with the exercise.

Get to the gym and start working out. I’m 62 and even with arthritis in my spine, my back feels great.

I’m only 57, but I did do an outdoor fencing tournament Friday and watched younger people than I am melt in the heat.
