Clowns don’t scare me. I grew up with Ronald McDonald, Bozo, Emmet Kelly, The Town Clown, and Redd Skelton (Freddy the Freeloader). You know what they say: “If you don’t confront your fears, the bigger they’ll grow”.
When I was 6, I had a minor operation that caused me to miss the first two weeks of first grade. When I was about to go to high school, I had a dream that I couldn’t start high school unless I did the two weeks of first grade.
Mine is that occasional flashback to my days in the Army, especially in Basic Training, with squad leaders and Drill Instructors yelling at me telling me how worthless I am and what a piece of you-know-what I am.
No, clowns never scared me either. My grandpa was a clown some of the time. The first time I saw him in his clown get-up at the circus I was angry at him because he had stolen my seat while I was in the bathroom. The scariest clown I saw was Ronald McDonald, not in any of the McDonald’s TV commercials but in an Oscar winning cartoon short called Logorama where he was cast as a criminal psychopath. I’m surprised that the McDonald’s corporation didn’t sue the ass off of the creators of that cartoon.

I can’t blame him. Clowns are scary, even that one.

How about the really good ones that didn’t need makeup, like Jackie Gleason and Lucille Ball.
