There are other means of communication as demonstrated.

It has been proven that dogs do understand what you are saying. They also are very good at interpreting vocal tone and body language.

My last canine buddy was a 90 lb. lap dog ! A purebred APBT who’d been born deaf. All his commands, obviously, were by hand signals and signs. If I was displeased with him, I’d turn my back and ignore him. Like a kid, he hated to be ignored and knew by my body language that he’d done something wrong. Far more effective than swatting him or yelling ( which he couldn’t hear, anyway. ).

Most animals have extensive vocabularies in both body and vocal language. You just have to learn their language and they will pick up some basics of yours. This includes wild as well as domestic species.
