The colorist has to feel like a complete idiot by now. If he had only looked at a Sunday strip. Oh, wait. He probably doesn’t read these comics, so he still doesn’t know.
The Comics Curmudgeon can’t figure out why Rover has three legs in the last thought balloon. I guess he doesn’t read GA often enough to understand the visual humor.
And as for the colorist, as Starman said, he should have paid attention to the Sunday strips which are colored “officially”. These weekday strips are colored by someone who has no reference from the artist. So we get brown in this story line and white on Sundays until today when poor Chipper is graying rapidly.
I’ve been reading the archives, and in the 12/24/10 strip the whole family is at Walt’s and Chipper is standing right next to Hoogie & Rover. Jim is changing history to fit his current plot.

Have far out in the country do Rover and Hoogy live, that he hasn’t seen his uncle since he was a little kid?

So that’s the reason for the brown rather than black hair.

While out in the woods Chip didn’t have time to use his Just For Men dye so the roots start showing their natural gray.

I always thought this was a close knit family, in a close knit community.

Chipper told Rover he had “grown 3 feet.”
Each foot is attached to a leg…3 feet, 3 legs.
Get it now?
Leave it to those colorist people!
