    In one of Aesop’s fables, all the body parts decide to deprive the stomach of food, because all it does is consume. Soon they themselves become weak and malnourished forcing them to end their strike. Similarly, the appendix serves as a vital repository for intestinal bacteria, helping to maintain a diverse population and providing a backup/recovery system when illness causes the system to flush itself, or after the purge of broad spectrum antibiotics.
