Caulfield: Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" may be the most covered song in modern music. And his own version is arguably the weakest one out there. All the versions we like are basically...somebody's version of Jeff Buckley's version of John Cale's version of Leonard Cohen's version of his own song. Mr. Spaetzle: If Rufus copied off your quiz, Rufus is in a little trouble. Caulfield: But what if he improved on it, is what I'm asking. Mr. Spaetzle: In academia it doesn't work like that. Caulfield: Also, royalties.

Neither of those concepts work in college or university. Unless it is science it could work in both ways.

I know. That sentence is so badly written,
there have actually been some commenters who thought theyâd have to leave, because they didnât know how to do bold or italics.
Â
Iâve also seen quite a few comments all in boldâŠ.and I finally realised those were from people who also think it means
you have to use bold or italics now to post.
Â
Honestly, folksâŠno.
You donât.
You can. You donât have to.

Is Caulfield implying that somebody else can do better than him?

Then again, most people like Jimi Hendrixâs version of âAll Along the Watchtowerâ better than Bob Dylanâs original version (and Dylan wrote the song to begin with).

Looks like what Caulfield actually is asking is, did Rufus get a better grade or write a more inventive quiz. If so, Caulfield wants some of the credit.

This comic is a reference to Rufus Wainwrightâs cover of Hallelujah which is unquestionably the very best one.

Iâve heard Bob Dylanâs voice compared to âa small mammal trapped in a heating ductâ. The best songwriters usually do the worst versions of their own songs and have the worst voices.

Definitely gotta go with Wainwright on this one. Thank you Shrek. âLove is not a victory marchâŠâ

I realize that itâs not the point of the strip but Leonard Cohenâs version is my absolute favorite, itâs got more heart than all the others combined

Never heard John Caleâs version, but the better singers versions lacked the gravitas of the original.
BTW, how many caught that the other famous cover was by RUFUS Wainwright?

The best cover of Hallelujah is by K.D. Lang by far. Her performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics closing ceremony was pure magic.

Câmon guys! Todayâs strip was one of the best! Brilliant! And it was such a nice try by the kid.
Please donât be dissuaded by that one nagging, negative guy who hates this strip with a passion that knows no bounds. Tune him out and enjoy it for itâs briliance. Please!

Dylan isnât Nobel Laureate for his voice, which, like most singers, has changed over his lifetime. Dylanâs true genius is in his lyrics and the fact that he has influenced so many singers in so many genres â folk, rock, country, blues, gospel, even proto-rap.(for a rap example listen to- Subterranean Homesick Blues © 1965 Bob Dylan)

At least that was better than Oscar Levantâs description of Louis Armstrong, âA frog with a man in his throat.â

There are a lot of singers who owe a great debt to Dylan; prior to him, it was assumed that a recording artist would have a good singing voice. Dylan broke ground for all those folks who had great songs but âunusualâ voices.

Presumably Caulfield is in the principalâs office because he copied off of someoneâs paperâtest or quiz. But if he improved on the answer? Or did he take the other kidâs answer, expand on it, and hand it back to the other kid? The whole monologue about the song and itâs varied versions is very interesting, but Iâm wondering just what exactly Caulfield did.
