By my senior year (1978-79), guys were required to take home ec, with one option titled “Bachelor Living.” I had a head start, as my mother already didn’t believe in letting children of either sex go out into the world without knowing how to cook and clean, and gave my sister and I plenty of practice. My brother-in-law’s mother, on the other hand, was determined to take care of her boys. I don’t think he cooked a lick between that class and when he started managing a Pizza Hut, other than occasional grilling. I, meanwhile, do most of our cooking (just to make sure I get homemade), and like to remind my wife that I’m well equipped if she ever makes it necessary to be a bachelor again.
