“Hallmark” Ha,that’s funny! Good answer Michael! Halloween might have had its origins thousands of years ago with the celts,but its crass North American comercialism that keeps it,and other popular holidays going strong.

And just to answer Lizzie’s question: the Catholic church “invented” All Saints Day. The night before was, as others have said, borrowed from Celtic, Wiccan and other traditions.

In the US up through the 1920’s, Hallowe’en was “celebrated” with pranks that included arson, vandalism and general mayhem committed by mostly teenaged boys. It was one of the major cities (I don’t remember which one.) that suggested the idea of children dressing up and collecting candy in an effort to redirect the destructive traditions. It caught on pretty well, didn’t it? You seldom hear of warehouses being set on fire on Halloween night as a prank anymore.

Thank God we girls don’t grow up the way we used to.
