One year I wanted to dress up as a black cat. My sister, who had a sewing machine, got the pattern for me. Then our mother stepped in: 1) it couldn’t be black (dangerous walking in the dark), so I had to get a bright satin leopard print; 2) it had to be oversized to fit a coat (not jacket) over; 3) I had to stick some of those stupid orange reflective dot stickers somewhere on it. I was profoundly disappointed.

I remember dressing as a vampire so I could turn into a bat and fly. I was profoundly disappointed.
