Here we see Garfield (once again) kicking Odie off the table. All Odie wanted was to play a little pretend, and Garfield ruined it. But thatās okay, right? Heāll be mindlessly bouncing around with his tongue out again soon enough. However, unbeknownst to most of us, repressed deep in the recesses of Odieās mind are feelings. Feelings of anger, sadness, and most of all, pain. Landing on your head after being kicked off a high tabletop hurts, folks. Itās not just kicking though. For years, Odieās body has been gradually weakened from Garfieldās āpractical jokesā. Heās been jumped on, twisted up into a basketball, even punched in the face.
As we all know, a soda can only be shaken so much before it pops from the pressure. Same with Odie. He can only pretend to be happy and trusting for so long before he can no longer take Garfieldās abuse. Eventually, Odie will wonder if he can even trust Garfield anymore to be his friend. When that happens, heāll wonder if all those times Garfield treated him like a buddy were legitimate, or simply a lie to preserve Odieās trust.
What will happen when Odie āpopsā? Will he go into a deep depression and long for his old owner, Lyman, becoming a shattered shell of his old self? Or will he fight back? A possible scenario occurs in a strip from 2005, which was revealed to be only a dream.
