Jeremy: So how'd I do, Mrs. D? How'd I come across? Don't sugarcoat your answer! Lacey: Jeremy, you're very sweet. But I"m afraid you're also... well... a tad eccentric. Jeremy: I have to disagree, Mrs. D. I'm not eccentric. I'm genuinely strange. Lacey: Oh... then you know. Jeremy: I've always known. Lacey: This doesn't concern you? Jeremy: Why? It doesn't currently affect my insurance premiums.

Like the fact that Jeremy has no use for euphemisms.

Call ‘em as ya see ’em, Jeremy! But keep in mind, it can affect your future prospects. Tact, m’boy, sometimes is the art of saying ‘nice doggy’ while feeling for that big rock.

………. and Jeremy’s beat goes on, to a very different drummer.

I remember this when it first came out. I put “I’m not eccentric: I am genuinely strange” on a badge and wore it to SF conventions.

It is like having a low FICO score (because I stood up to the phone co over some illegal charges).
The condo mortgage is paid off, I have the three recommended free credit cards, and I have no plans for any new loans.

It’s the eccentrics in any society that are our most creative people. They refuse to conform or “play it safe;” hence they are freer to take chances that most of us are unwilling to take out of fear of not being “accepted.” If we could all be freer to be less self conscious and more in touch with our “inner eccentric,” most of us could tap into some wonderful creative possibilities.

IMO the comments made about Jeremy all week are a great tribute to Garry Trudeau’s talents. After all, he’s a toon, a 2 dimensional drawing on paper and not a real person, but GT’s genius lies in bringing people like him to life and making us interested in them. I suppose we’ve all known someone with some of Jeremy’s spaced out, disconnected, weirdness but he also brings a unique personality all his own to us. Garry: long may you run, even if only on Sundays.

Is there any way to find out (easily) the original date on which this strip ran? I want to identify it properly when I put it on my wall.

Years ago, the little neighbor kid who sometimes came over to coach me on Mario said he got a lot of flak at school. I told him I’d had that as well, and couldn’t really help with that, but that if he could just get through it, it would end. “I wear white socks and high water pants every day,” I said, “and nobody bugs me about it at all. It’s horrible now, but it will end.”
.
I think about him sometimes. We moved away from the apartment and the state. He’s an adult now, somewhere. I really hope things are going okay for him.
