Finding himself once again annoyed by Odie’s stupidity, Garfield smacks Odie across the face, startling him and causing him to lose his grip on the branch. He shatters his ankle when he lands. Garfield just laughs at his misery. Having endured Garfield’s abuse for years, Odie can no longer handle being hurt in some way by Garfield every day. He can no longer trust Garfield as his friend. He cries for days on end, not wanting to eat or sleep. Soon, impulses take over and Odie tearfully packs his bags and runs away to find his old owner, Lyman.
A few days later, while out looking for him, Jon is devastated to find Odie’s corpse on the freeway, covered in tire tracks, with his suitcase flattened next to him and dingleballs strewn all over the road. He had been accidentally run over trying to cross the freeway, trying to find Lyman.
