The following was meant to be posted as part of a discussion on Fri Dec 1 about newspapers being forced to drop this comic strip because some people were offended by an occasional spiritual reference by its creator Johnny Hart.
When decent God-fearing people express dismay because of the filth on TV we’re told to shut up and turn the channel. Well, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If a sincere and heartfelt expression of a person’s spiritual views is truly a trauma inducing experience for you, then may I humbly suggest two things: First, get some good counseling. Second, shut up and turn the channel (i.e. just don’t read the strip). You do not have the right to force your neurosis on everyone else through censorship.
“Artist” enshrine crucifixes in jar of urine and call that art and everyone has to accept that as free speech, but when the artist Johnny Hart acknowledge his personal belief in Jesus Christ through his art we get comments written by urine soaked hands claiming his art is offensive and MUST be censored? Is the word “hypocrite” leaping into anyone else’s mind?
Just because a minuscule number of fragile and hyper-sensitive hypocritical secular humanistic malcontents disingenuously claim they can’t tolerate an artist expressing his constitutionally acknowledged and protected right of free speech doesn’t mean doesn’t mean that the millions of us with an opposing view have to kowtow to them. Freedom of speech is the right of ALL people, not just the godaphobic . It is even a right for Christians like Johnny Hart. May God rest his soul!
