Your statement regarding why Christmas is in December instead of the historically more accurate Spring, is a slight exaggeration. More accurately, compare it to Hanukah, a minor celebration (much like Whitsuntide in Christianity) which was forced to major by a major secular holiday of Greeday (also called Christmas). It was the subtle, but powerful, cultural influence, rather than a conscious competition.
