Yes, it is funny so little protection our things have – until it actually happens.

As soon as I clicked on this the radio mentioned the

Carrington event of 1 Sept 1859.

Coronal Mass Ejections are no fun anymore. Actually, small devices are not affected. Long East-West power lines can be devastated, though, as the large DC currents produced by CMEs can induce hundreds of amperes into them and through the transformers where it causes the transformers to saturate on the AC peaks. That severely damages these transformers that normally take months to replace, but when a bunch are needed at one time the lead time can become years. (30+ years working in an electric utility.)

Keep a calendar and a sundial or wind-up clock in the emergency kit.

So many things are a question of WHEN not IF, but humans seem unbelievably capable of ignoring reality.

Just add this to all the other worries and concerns. If it happens you will either live or die… Why get an ulcer worrying about it?

An EMP situation is definitely not if but when. As a radio operator I deal with sunspots regularly. They can help or hinder communications. The BIG problem is that any country or terrorist group could bring on an EMP attack and our country would be down the drain for MANY years. Lots of folks would die. You can prepare for EMP and you can survive. Just takes planning and preparation - which this country is not doing.

This comic sent me to the internet to read about “The Carrington Event.” I not only am buying calendars; I am buying a manual typewriter, a wind-up watch, and a crystal radio.

Just kidding about most of it, but it is a little bit frightening to realize that, if just the internet went out in the US today, there would actually be people who died.

I was at a Schlotzky’s one night. Our family had ordered a meal, and we had cash in hand; they had all the food they needed behind them. The electricity was on, and everything worked. But we were in a long line, all of us unable to get the food, because they could not connect their cash registers (old word, I know) to the internet.

I’m not sure why anyone would need a calendar, or even a clock, after such a devasting event. Just get up every day and go look for food and water. Start making tally marks on the wall if you want to keep track of time. If you have a wall.

Big difference between a device connected to a thousand mile long "antenna’ (the power line) and something in your pocket. That’s why so many telegraph operators got jolted by the Carrington event.

If it would shut trump’s tweets up, I’d pray for another Carrington event.
