What's the difference between arts and crafts? It's artsy if your kids suddenly discovers the joy, and pride, in creating a unique thing, distinct and original, using his own skill and experience. And,,,? It's crafty when you give your kid a pile of paper, scissors, paint, glue, glitter and markers so they'll be out of your hair for a couple of hours.

I would consider art to be mostly about aesthetics, whereas crafts are more likely to be something functional

Art originally meant knowing how to do something. For example, a boy was apprenticed to someone who promised to teach him the arts and mysteries of whatever he was apprenticed to learn.
Along the way the meaning of the word art changed to mean the item made by someone with the arts and mysteries of that trade. It was later divided into fine art – paintings, sculpture and later photography and other new media. What was left was craft – that which has a usability.
