I didn’t know that! I’ve been to Naha and I could’ve got me some star-shaped sand if they’d had some in the bars I went to.

Sand stars, very cool. One more item to add to my bucket list is to head to indio pacific and find some. They could be some of the oldest fossils known to man, and you can potentially find some still alive as well…

I knew that Ulysses Grant was a Republican, but not that his successors, Rutherford Hayes and James Garfield, were. Benjamin Harrison, our 23rd President, had an early fondness for beards. I had thought that the period from Lincoln through Harrison was the bearded President era.

@libp68@Night-Gaunt49Both the Democrats and the Republicans have changed from what they were, to the same basic thing today. Many Democrats and many Republicans today are strong 2nd Amendment rights people. Many people in both parties are strongly in favor of gun control. Many people in both parties are strongly pro-life. Many people in both are strongly pro-choice. But that’s the people who believe they have to pick one or the other. The parties (which in American politics are legally defined by their establishments, not by their rank and file) both believe in being in power, no matter how much they have to lie to those people they are hoping will vote.

    .

What used to be called a liberal (if they are successful), by definition later has to be called a conservative: they want to conserve the liberal ways they brought in. So liberal and conservative are terms that have to change regularly.

Democrats still have a few of their platform planks from years ago. Republicans have quite a few of the same planks. On that basis the Democrats have changed further. But the parties are essentially the same. The Trumps and Clintons have been friends for years. I assume Bill & Donald will remain friends – I know of no reason they shouldn’t. I’d be surprised if Hill and Don are still friends, but I’m not in their class, so no surprise. Remember – it wasn’t long ago that Trump was registered Democrat (after all, he’s a rich Wall Street type, most of whom are Dem unless it politically suits to be Rep) and gave money to the Clintons regularly. Trump (& other Wall St types) switch as needed – or more often ensure that some of their people are in each party.

We need to spend more time paying attention to what’s really happening, not what somebody wants us to think is happening.

Not all Okinawan beaches have star sand (just on small nearby islands now), and star sand is actually the shells of protozoa. And most star sand is found in China now. Way to be “only sorta right”, Ripley’s.
