Strom Thurmond from Dixiecrat to Republican. Brought back the Confederate battle flag as a symbol of White Separatism in 1948. 1957: He filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act in the year of my birth. A representative of the bad side of the USA.

Now the Republicans are passing a law to keep the Democrats from filibustering the same way they do.

And in the end it didn’t do old Strom one lick of good. The Act was passed anyway. A filibuster only delays the inevitable, because the other side KNOWS you’re just delaying.

It’s funny… chasing fictional creatures can get people off their butts, fear of heart disease, diabetes or just a general desire to be healthier can’t.

It may be significant that when the Commonwealth of Australia was formed, observers had spent time in the USA.

The Speaker of Parliament has the right to impose STRICT restrictions on how long members may speak. :)

filibustering against the Civil Rights act for over a day…that is an awfully unpleasant thing to be remembered for, even worse than the peeing in a bucket an intern was forced to hold. Anyway isn’t a filibuster what they do when they can’t come up with an argument for their own side, so they just stall until everyone is too tired to vote?
