Baking Soda is not going to react with the water anymore than Washing Soda would. Not going to react all that much with the mud created with the dirt and water or the rocks. Baking Powder on the other hand would be a different story. And even then with 3 gallons of water it would take a LOT of baking soda to do much.

Besides about to create a mess in the kitchen, what’s the experiment with all those things? (I’d take the project to the yard.)

Because baking soda is used to cut cocaine and other drugs, it is not available in the grocery stores, here in Ecuador.
You have to go to a pharmacy to obtain it and then, it’s a hassle.
