I’m guessing the squirrels use their sense of smell. Why? I once buried some nuts at the beginning of winter in the hopes that some would grow into trees, but all were dug up by squirrels. Unless they were watching me and remembered where I buried the nuts, it had to be smell.
I still read/hear often that squirrels bury nuts for winter sustenance. Observations show this to be wrong. The nuts are buried to store them while they are available. The squirrels then use them the rest of the year – just like canning fruits. What I haven’t figured out is how/why I find nuts in my yard from tree species that are nowhere near my house.
I used to feed the birds and the squirrels in the yard. I bought peanuts for the squirrels. There were several regulars that I could tell apart. I would see one bury a peanut, then go back about 5 minutes later and dig it back up and bury it somewhere else. It was indeed entertaining. Then, alas, the landlord made me quit feeding wildlife.

Of all the times I’ve been to Portland, I reckon I’ve never seen Miss Glaw and Bart down the streets. (Since when is a 31-inch snowman a nuisance?)

Are they certain the squirrels aren’t using FindMyNuts on their iPhone?

I’ll bet the squirrels bury the nuts prior to winter.
