I remember the comments from people early on in Trump’s career about no Trump cartooning. Twas said, we have a full 4 years, maybe 8 to cartoon the Trump. And, we bring in the Misses for a little lampooning. So much material, either candidate was good for the cartoonist, but Trump, he sure supplies the goods.
Did Melania actually do anything, or is this a GT fantasy? (I’m asking because I don’t know.)
I remember him getting on Nancy Reagan, at least, so there’s apparently a rule that Republican first ladies are fair game.
Sunday morning challenge: find a Doonesbury saying anything about Michelle Obama. I tried for a few minutes with GoComics and Google, and found not one.
Follow-up: I figured out how to really search with the GoComics engine (it’s really very powerful, just the UI is dreadful).
Here are both (!) Doonesbury comics referencing “Michelle”: one from the 70’s has a random character named Michelle, and in the other, Mrs. Obama delivers the punch line, from “off-camera”.
When I searched MSNBC for Melania Tweet, I found just this from November: “Melania Trump said that ending social media bullying would be her focus if she became First Lady.”
If GT wanted to point out she’ll have her hands full just ending small-hands’ social media misbehavior, that would be fair game, no?
But to pick on her for something she didn’t do because he hates her husband is clearly outside the lines GT has always operated in. Even Nancy Reagan, whose husband he hated equally, only got picked on for things she was widely reported to have actually done.
The trump administration is a joke unto itself, yet they can’t take a joke. It is strange how some wish to make Stephen Colbert have higher standards than the POTUS, for example. Trump gets a free pass for vile comments as POTUS, yet, a comedian must be held to a higher standard it seems. Besides, all Stephen Colbert did was mirror the vile comments that were made by trump. And yes, it is quite an irony that the FLOTUS would start a campaign against cyberbullying… Meanwhile, the country is going down the toilet while trump tweets. The GOP had a great party at the White House this week after basically sentencing many Americans to death by voting against healthcare so that wealthy Americans could enjoy tax cuts. Typically, the disgusting party was all documented on social media by the trumps.
I wonder when conservatives will realize that perhaps the reason why many in the GOP are more often satirized is that Republicans tend to be easier targets of satire? Several of us have pointed out how ironic it is that Melania wants to campaign against cyber bullying. Someone else complained about GT saying something about Nancy Reagan in her time as FLOTUS. Nancy did have a rather naive approach in her “Just say no” campaign, let’s face it. OTOH, GT didn’t criticize Nancy when she later on championed for stem cells as an approach in treating devastating illnesses. Nancy was motivated to do this due to the fact that Ronald Reagan was at that time suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, a terrible degenerative disease which continues to devastate millions of patients and their families. Writers and cartoonists are free to state their opinions, as we live in a free country. If you ever tire of this being the case, I might suggest you try living in perhaps North Korea or Russia, where freedom of the press does not exist. Since we live in a free country, we are free to express our opinions, and we are under NO obligation to give equal time to a different opinion if it is not our own opinion. It is one thing to listen to the other side, that is an important thing to do, however, one is entitled to one’s own opinion, without having to express an opinion which belongs to someone else! Therefore, like it or not, GT is under no obligation to express a view that he does not have just to make someone else happy. Sorry, that’s just not the way it works.
@montesoriteacher My dear, I wasn’t challenging GT’s right to say whatever he wants; the 1st is my favorite amendment.
I was merely pointing out (and then documenting) that this time he seems to be going beyond anything he has ever done in his previous 48 years.
And I was expressing my opinion that it is really unfair: in the past he has always regarded the FLOTUS as off-limits unless she put herself in harm’s way by doing something ridiculous (hence the mention of Nancy).
Of course, for part of Obama’s terms as president, Trudeau was running classics six days a week and only doing new Sunday strips. (I won’t bother looking up when he started running classics.)
As for the point of the strip today, Trump’s been accused not “just” of sexual harassment, as was O’Reilly, but of actual rape. No, I don’t know if he did it, and neither does anybody else reading this post. (Unless Trump or his alleged victim are peeking in.)
Satire is often used to point out an issue. It is not so effective if there really is no issue. How does anyone really dispute Michelle Obama’s advocacy for good nutrition in schools? How would we take issue with Ladybird Johnson’s environmental cause to plant more wildflowers? Is there an issue with Jackie Kennedy’s advocacy for historical preservation of buildings? (Personally, I agree with Nancy Reagan’s advocacy of stem cell research, as therein lies hope for millions of people with terrible illness, but some did not agree with her advocating for stem cell research.) Surely, most would agree with Hillary Clinton’s advocacy for fighting for poverty-stricken children, something she spent a lifetime working on. Is someone seriously against Laura Bush’s or Barbara Bush’s advocacy for literacy? Surely not. What makes Melania Trump’s advocacy against cyber bullying different? Unfortunately, Melania lacks credibility, being married to the tweeter in chief. I realize some might say that Hillary should have gotten Bill to behave better, however, what happened in their marriage is between the two of them. What trump does on twitter can be a problem for all of us, not just his wife and family.
Cough Bill Clinton cough? OK. Whatever. I am not so worried about what public officials do on their own time, and to be honest, I don’t think most of Clinton’s critics are all that worried about it either. Plenty of Republicans, for example, Mark Sanford, have continued on in public life despite their transgressions in their personal lives. If you are a Democrat, you are supposed to be a perfect angel in this regard, but all bets are off for Republicans.
I thought all “great men” were supposed to be scumbags in their personal life. The modern era certainly has precious few exceptions to this rule. Most were serial philanderers, and that’s just for starters.
For all the noise made about Bill Clinton’s extra-marital nonsense, none of it affected me or most other Americans personally….and he is still married to the same woman….At last count, Trump is on number 3…with countless affairs and the rape of a 13 year old child to his credit.
The one saving grace of this administration is that I am having a lot more fun seeing the FB postings, caricatures, comics, SNL performances, stand-up comic routines and just about every other kind of joke possible than I would have ever had watching them shred anything decent that Hillary tried to do.
