Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for August 06, 2009
Transcript:
Republican: Actually, I was sleeping with my soulmate's sister before I met her. That's how God led me to her. This was before Sanford, Pickering and Ensign all met their soulmates, so I was flying blind! I had no inkling that God would then test me by placing her husband in my path. First he demanded $50,000 for his silence. Then, after I paid, he raised it to $100,000! Voice: So her husband betrayed you. Republican: Yes, but I'm a Christian - do I forgive him? At The Family's urging, Senator X's tale tumbles out.

Sooo, that’s what it means to be “christian” is it? Hmm, and here I thought it was to be a good person. Of course, by that standard, we’d have to burn most politicians at the stake, as well as lobbyists and CEOs

No, “Christian” does not equal “good person”. It does not equal “bad person” or “hypocrite” or “fool”, either.
It is unfortunate that a certain type of bad, foolish hypocrite thinks that by bleating “I’m a Christian” loudly and repeatedly it somehow exempts them from ordinary standards of ethical and moral behavior.

Huh? What do Christianity and breaking vows have in common? One is supposed to be following the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (not worshiping him!) and the other is an ages old problem found in all cultures.

If he’s a Christian, doesn’t that mean that Wolverine will come and “take out” the evil husband of his soul-mate?

RE: “Christian” - C’mon folks, Trudeau is mocking hypocritical politicians. He does it all the time, and he’s not partial to either Dem or Rep.

I suspect that true religion (following Christ) has very little to do with politics.
And I suspect that many who say “Lord, Lord..” will be surprised come reckoning day…

Avolunteer,
Where do you get the notion that Christianity does not support the notion of worshiping Jesus? Christianity equates Jesus with God. If it didn’t, it would reject, for starters, the Gospel of John.

Be strong my brother. Forgiving the adulteress’s evil husband is a fine first step on the road to glory.
Remember: “…forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. ”

Trudeau is making fun of a specific group of Christians known as The Family. One of their beliefs is that members have been chosen by God and, therefore, are exempt from all other moral considerations.

Joe Allen: Yes, you’re right. In biblical days, what has evolved down through the centuries into “marriage”, was simply a transfer of ownership of the girl/woman from her father to her “husband”. A simple, legal transfer of “property”. When you read about “marriages” in the bible, it’s just not so. Since “God” allegedly approved these transfers, we somehow have come to believe that “God” is a big backer of marriage. (I love these characters in Doonesbury believing that God finds them so special - that must take an amazing ego)

Ooh, I bet there’s some righteous indignation brewing among the Fellowship at the C Street Center right now. Should they forgive Trudeau?
