I encourage communication in this manner. I will go upstairs to our bedroom, put my headphones on while watching tv or listening to music, and will tell my kids to text me if they need anything, call when ready to go, or something similar. I hate yelling upstairs or downstairs, across two rooms or more, we have cell phones, why not use them?
(Also living rooms don’t typically have doors leading to the hallway.)
On second thought, maybe I don’t wanna know…but I wanna let you all know that since Tony didn’t phrase it in the form of a question, the following is….

If I had a family, cell phones would be forbidden for internal use.
