Jim has found as an artist his creative “niche” a place where he feels most happy. Like Picasso had his “blue” period. Jim has his “Joel and Rufus” period. Whether he is aware of what fans of G.A. are saying or not he doesn’t seem to care and will draw what suits him best. I myself wish he’d go back to the Wallet family and growing pains of the grandchildren.
I for one, really enjoy all of Jim’s work, but I am especially fond of Joel (and to a lesser extent, Rufus, since he started to get a bit ornery). Any GA featuring Joel definitely brightens my day.
Joel and Rufus haven’t been secondary characters since they were introduced in the late ‘40s or early ’50s. The Dick Moores strips of the 1960s and ’70s contain extensive Joel, Rufus and Miss Melba story arcs. So don’t think this is a new phenomenon or that Jim has found his “creative niche” with these characters. What he has found is a story arc that fits them more than it would other characters in the cast.

I wish we could follow the original cast and make these two characters secondary

Odd thing to say, since it’s about the most normal thing Rufus has ever done.

I have always found them quite annoying. They are hopeless throwbacks to a time long gone.
